Our Engagement Story

I have no idea why it has me so long to write this story, but three years ago, on this day. I said yes to the man I have now called my husband for almost two years already. Pre-Engagement Ring Story: here.

a pre-side note: a little after 2 months of dating, we made the road trip down to celebrate New Years eve there and shared our first "i love you's" in the packed streets watching the (guitar) drop. It was the first visit to Nashville for this country-music-loving couple and we left just adoring the city.
6 months later, we made plans to fly to Nashville again because my husband's younger brother was about to deploy to Afghanistan. We couldn't pass up the opportunity to spend a little time with him before he left. The husband and I made our way to the hotel to get everything settled, then met up with his brother. They took me boot shopping, and I walked out of the store with not one but THREE pairs. I'm a lucky gal.

Next stop was the Country Music Hall of Fame. The first time the husband and I were there over New Years, they were closed. So we played tourists.

Brother in law (left) Husband (right)

At this point in time, I didn't expect anything different, but then the three of us went to the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner. Let's say my husband's brother isn't very secretive and mentioned something to my husband about "well why don't you ask her now". I played it off as if I heard nothing but deep down I knew at some point that weekend it was going to happen, and I got anxious.

We finished our dinner, and the boys decided to order some shots. I didn't want to take one, but the waiter wanted to give me a hard time, and got the entire restaurant to start chanting "Whitney...Whitney...Whitney..."

I caved and took the shot. Little did I know it was a shot of Jack Daniel's. I took it like a champ, compared to the boys, thanks to all that pressure.

We left, my face still red with embarrassment, and headed to one of my favorite bars: Coyote Ugly. We spent most of the night there, and had quite the time with the rest of his family. But during that night, I received a shot from one of the bartenders, that I didn't take right. Again, full of embarrassment on my part, I stormed out of the bar.

The husband followed me, calmed me down and sat me down on a ledge of a business window in one of the quiet side streets. I just kept repeating over and over to him "I just want to go back to the hotel. Take me back to the hotel."

He says at this point he was down on his knees already with me and thought it would be a the perfect time. He looks up at me, took his hands in mine and said "Whitney you can't go home yet, I've had this waiting in my pocket for the past two days." (pulls out the ring from his front pocket) and asks me (full name and all) if I would like to marry him.

I was in complete shock because I definitely was not expecting it to happen RIGHT there in that moment. I replied with the hugest smile on my face "Yes, of course I will."

We walked back to the hotel, hand in hand. Myself floating on cloud 9, leaving all of that embarrassment behind me. His parents and his brother were waiting to congratulate us. We then called my family to let them know the news, and went back out downtown to celebrate the rest of the night with his family.
The rest of the weekend was spent at one of their family-friends weddings near Fort Campbell, KY. The husband and I then said our "goodbyes" to his brother as he left that day to head over seas. We spent the next 9 hours in his truck together, talking about our wedding plans the entire ride home.
So now the city of Nashville has a near and dear place in my heart. It was the first place we shared our "I love yous" on a New Years Eve night, and the place where "I said yes"  only six months later, to spend the rest of my life with him.

Now, I realize that isn't the most romantic engagement story you have ever read. The trail of flower petals, standing on top of the Eiffel tower, and whatever else we girls dream up in our heads never happened. But in all honesty, who wants to all have the exact same story? Ours is quite unique and hard to match and I wouldn't trade my story or my husband for anything.

Our First Wedding Anniversary (Missing You)

Dear Husband,

I know I will shed a little tear as I write this, but it was a year ago today that I married one of my best friends in the entire universe! :)

You have been my rock, even when you were states away for the early months of our newly-wed life together.

We have missed a lot of "firsts" together as a married couple, including this First Wedding Anniversary (you being away unfortunately for Army Training), but doesn't mean we have missed them all. Our lives have just began!

I cherish the moments we get to spend together, even if it's only a half hour during the week, thanks to two different work schedules. But spending that 30 minute lunch together is priceless.

But through all of this, you continue to love and support me, and I honestly can not thank you enough! I'm so grateful that God has sent me the best gift I could ever ask for: You.

I. Love. You. (Te Amo) more every day, and those days we spend apart make those together even meaningful.

I look forward to Saturday when you finally come home to me, I miss you mucho.

Love,
Your wife.

Wedding [Reception]

The last most EPIC POST of my wedding. Mostly in pictures:

My reaction is priceless as we walk into our reception, of how many people were actually there to celebrate our wedding:

The Chaplin said a prayer and we ate. The Husbands's choice: bbq pork, mashed potatoes, and grilled vegetables. :)

Throughout the wedding, if guests wanted us to kiss (instead of clanking their glasses)...they had to share a story about either of us. There were some doosies. This was my husband's idea as well. Lots of laughs throughout dinner.

Our first "dinner" kiss.

Ha ha, this is my husband for you. He brought in a saber to cut our cake.

Love our reaction. We had red velvet cake for us, but to be honest...it was not good. Tasted like it may have sat out for a day or so before. :(

Our first dance.  "Love Your Love The Most"-Eric Church.

Father-Daughter Dance. This song I actually picked from a local country band (Chasin' Mason), and it was perfect. I highly doubt anyone else would have dance to this song.

Mother-Son Dance. "Simple Man" Lynnard Skynnard.

This would be the best man and my college-friend bridesmaids. They are always a hoot!

 My new "neice-in-law".

My girl college friends and the best man again. :)

Wedding March: "Smoke a Little Smoke"-Eric Church. We all wore shades, my husband's idea too. :)

Heck yes I know how to dance to Cotton Eye Joe! :)

The most epic picture of the night. This is my husband literally sliding in to get the garter. :) He's awesome.

We had a whole "Grease" dance line going on. It was phenomenal.

I guess it's a tradition, we karaoke sing to "You Don't Have to Call Me Darling". The couple to our right, we had done the same thing for their wedding just a month before.

A lot more singing and dancing. :)

Last Dance. "In Color"-Jamey Johnson.

i love him so.

Last kiss of the night.

Hope you enjoyed them! :) I love to relive the pictures over and over again.

Formal Wedding [Pictures]

I know some couples take pictures before the wedding to spend more time with guests after the ceremony is complete. Again we took the traditional route and didn’t have the pictures until after. I was glad we did it's sharing that excitement that it happened, together.

Here are some of them:

The Wedding [Rings]

I knew the ring I was getting before I even got engaged. We hadn’t been dating that long (about 4 months and we both knew we both were at the point of wanting to marry, have kids, the whole nine yards). One afternoon we were walking through the mall, he joked about picking out rings. I didn’t take him seriously until he actually dragged me into one of the jewelry store places there. I was so shocked, I couldn’t put two words together to have the employee know which ring I preferred over an other. Just the experience of trying on a ring, just puts everything into perspective. All I kept thinking over and over in my head is, “he actually wants to do this, he wants me to be the one for the rest of his life”. It was a bit overwhelming.

Well that first experience ring shopping didn’t go as smoothly has he planned, so he surprised me again (a month or so after) one random night. Stopped his truck in the parking lot of an actual jewelry store. I didn’t know what to think, he asked me “well do you want to go in?”. I just looked at him in amazement and nodded. If I didn’t get the hint now that he was really serious about this, I would be dumb. :)

We walked in, having more knowledge this time. We talked with the employee told her want I would like in a ring. My response: “simple, princess cut, only one stone”. I’m not a very dramatic/flashy girl, and my personality had to fit the ring. We picked one out and she made me walk around the store with it in. “Let it sink in” she said. That was the Husband's way to get me away so that they could discuss more details of the ring that I wasn’t/shouldn’t know.

I picked out a wrap that was simple as well. A little different in the fact that it doesn’t fill the middle of the actual engagement ring, but it wanted something that didn’t necessary “go” together. But when it was put together, it looked like it was. The husband put a down payment on the ring and the wrap right then an there that same night. So we left the store, knowing that I was “engaged” but just not “asked” yet.

What about engagement story? I’ll share that in another post at a different time. Let me tell you, it’s a doosey, one that would not be defined as “romantic” to other brides in some cases, but perfect in my book! Stick around for it!

But it’s the rings, itself that are most important symbol to me of our marriage. Seeing that on his left hand everyday, or every day that I can (since he’d been away for Army training), means the world to me. I have someone there who will stick by my side, forever. I don’t think that feeling will ever go away, and I didn’t think it’d all happen ever so quickly. <3
