Such an Incredible Experience

This morning, at 4:00am the husband and I got up. He packed his things and I drove him to the airport before the sun rose in the sky. A little nervous and so excited, my husband walked into the terminal with some of the most brave and honorable men and women.

Nearly 900 WII veterans pass away every day nation wide. Most have not seen the memorials built in their honor.

Today he is a guardian for some of those veterans who finally get a chance to see the memorial in Washington D.C. They get to spend the day at the memorial and around the Nation's Capital and fly back later tonight.

This is such an incredible experience, and I'm so glad he had the opportunity to do this, with the Old Glory Honor Flight. I'm sure it's one he will never forget!

I can't wait to hear the stories and see all the photos he took.

  2. And now I'm ugly crying. What an amazing experience and honor for your husband. Can you imagine today's young generations doing what these men and women did in WWII?

  5. I had a patient a couple months ago who was 98 years old and was able to take part in this. He had his family bring in photos of the trip to share with me and luckily I had time that day to sit and listen to him talk. He shared how being able to take the trip meant more than the world to him and while his son went along as his guardian he was astonished by the number of young men {like your hubby} who gave up their time to "push a bunch of old men around in wheelchairs all day."

Hearing how much the trip meant to him is something I'll remember forever. He also shared stories of the war. Things he had seen, heard, and taken part in. And each and every on of them was pure heartbreaking. He spoke of starving children and how they weren't allowed to share their food with him. They just had to toss it in the garbage right in front of all the hungry, starving children. It saddened my heart to hear his stories but I am so glad that I got the chance to spend the time with him.

I'm sure that you're hubby will have a wonderful time today! It truly is an honor to take part in the flight and to get to visit with the veterans and hear their stories first hand.

  10. My Grandpa did the Honor Flight last summer! He is a WWII vet and he absolutely loved the chance to get to go to DC. We all had a great time writing letters for him that he read on the plane ride back too. I'm so happy that programs like this exist. :)
